Warners is working towards a sustainable future Reducing our reliance on mains water has been a major priority of this business. We use either drip or overhead irrigation depending on pot size with all run off being collected in relatively clean condition. The growing beds have plenty of windbreaks to reduce water evaporation and plants are grouped according to water use. Runoff water is captured and stored in tanks before treatment with chlorine dioxide to eliminate possible pathogens. Other projects include paper and cardboard collection, computer waste recycling, and plastic pot recycling. To further reduce nursery waste all unwanted plant clippings are collected and blended with our discarded potting mix to create landscape grade compost. Thicker green waste and discarded bamboo stakes are chipped by a contractor and used to mulch our garden beds. We use an extensive fleet of electric trolleys to transport plant stock within the nursery, and bicycles are supplied for staff use – this has led to a quieter and less polluted workplace. We ensure that all delivery vehicles are used efficiently and are fully loaded before leaving the nursery. Our product range has changed to promote the trend towards sustainable gardens, and we are constantly trialling new varieties that could complement our range.
