Laurus nobilis 'Baby Bay' pbr Ball
'Baby Bay' pbr is a compact, dwarf variety of the traditional Bay Laurel. It features glossy, dark green, aromatic leaves that are smaller and more refined than those of the standard species, which can be utilised as a culinary herb. The dense foliage grows in a bushy, rounded shape, making it an ideal option for small spaces or container planting. In spring, it produces small clusters of pale-yellow flowers, which are followed by dark purple berries in autumn.
Cultural
Thrives in a full sun to part shade position, 'Baby Bay' pbr prefers well-drained, fertile soil. While it tolerates a range of soil types, it performs best in conditions that provide good drainage. Once established, 'Baby Bay' pbr has a low water requirement, making it relatively drought-tolerant. However, regular watering is beneficial, especially during extended dry periods or while the plant is still young. To support healthy growth, apply a long-term, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. This variety responds well to pruning, allowing it to be kept smaller if needed. Although generally resistant to pests and diseases, it is advisable to check occasionally for common pests like scale insects and treat them if necessary.
Landscape Uses
Laurus balls, with their dense, glossy green foliage and neat, rounded form, bring a classic and elegant touch to the landscape. They are ideal for framing entrances, lining pathways, or adding structure to formal gardens and courtyards. Their versatility also makes them perfect for container planting, where they can be used as statement pieces on patios, balconies, or flanking doorways.
