Lavandula angustifolia
Lavandula angustifolia is a hardy drought-tolerant perennial. Commonly known as English lavender this fine leafed shrub is known for its strongly aromatic foliage and bright purple blue flowers.
Cultural
Plant in well drained soil in open sunny position for best flowering. Tolerates coastal conditions and requires minimal watering once established. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and vigor, and to prevent woody stems. Harvesting flowers regularly will encourage prolonged flowering.
Landscape Uses
English lavender is widely grown for its fragrant flowers and essential oil which has sedative, antiseptic, and insecticidal properties, and is used in aromatherapy, herbal teas, potpourris, and sachets. It is suited to formal and informal gardens and works well as a border or low hedge after a few years growth. It is suited to coastal gardens and Aussie Mediterranean inspired designs.
