Prunus lusitanica Ball
Prunus lusitanica, commonly known as Portuguese Laurel, is a dense, evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy, dark green leaves held on striking deep red stems. In late spring to early summer, it produces long, clusters of small, fragrant white flowers, followed by small red fruits that mature to black.
Cultural
Prunus lusitanca is tolerant of heat, frost, wind and coastal conditions. Prune soon after flowering to avoid fruit production. CAUTION: fruit is toxic to mammals.
Soil:
Prefers a fertile, well-drained soil but can tolerate poorer soils.
Aspect:
Full sun to part shade.
Maintenance:
Prune lightly throughout the year to maintain size and shape. Apply a slow release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. Will benefit from a yearly application of mulch. Susceptible to aphids, mildew and shot-hole disease, treat as required. Good air-circulation will help minimise disease.
Water Requirements:
Drought tolerant once established. Will benefit from occasional, deep watering during extended dry periods.
Seasonal Interest:
Summer flowering, year round foliage interest.
Landscape Uses
Topiary balls are ideal for formal gardens or modern Japanese gardens, though can add structure to any garden. They are great planted in clusters, or used in pots to frame an entrance or walkway. In late spring to early summer Prunus lusitanica becomes particularly striking when covered in masses of fragrant white flowers.
