Trachelospermum jasminoides
Commonly known as Star Jasmine, this vigorous evergreen climber has glossy, dark green leaves that are oval-shaped and leathery in texture. The leaves can take on a reddish or bronze hue in cooler temperatures. Its most distinctive feature is the profusion of small, star-shaped, pure white flowers that appear from late spring to summer, releasing a sweet, jasmine-like fragrance. The flowers are five-petaled and delicate, contrasting beautifully against the lush foliage.
Cultural
Performs best in a position sheltered from cold winds and harsh afternoon sun in warmer climates. Moderately frost tolerant once established.
Soil:
Prefers a fertile, well-drained soil but will tolerate most well-drained soils.
Aspect:
Full sun to part shade.
Maintenance:
Prune in early spring. Apply a general fertiliser in spring if plants lack vigour. Will benefit from an annual application of compost and mulch.
Water Requirements:
Will tolerate dry periods once established but performs better with adequate moisture.
Seasonal Interest:
Spring to summer flowering.
Landscape Uses
Its twining habit makes it ideal for covering walls, fences, trellises, pergolas, or arbours, adding vertical interest and creating a lush, green backdrop. When allowed to spread horizontally, it forms a dense, evergreen ground cover, effectively suppressing weeds and stabilising slopes. Additionally, its highly fragrant, star-shaped flowers make it an outstanding choice for sensory or fragrance gardens.
