Viburnum tinus
A hardy shrub with leathery leaves that remain a deep-green throughout the year. Masses of pink flower buds erupt into petite, white flowers throughout winter and spring, before forming metallic-blue berries. The flowers are fragrant and are great for attracting birds and insects.
Cultural
Viburnum tinus can tolerate shade but will flower better in sunnier positions. Prune right after flowering to avoid fruit production. Tolerant of coastal conditions and frost. CAUTION: fruit is harmful if ingested.
Soil:
Prefers a fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil.
Aspect:
Full sun to full shade.
Maintenance:
Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape, or to remove any dead or damaged branches. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth.
Water Requirements:
Will tolerate dry periods once established but performs better with adequate moisture.
Seasonal Interest:
Winter to spring flowering, autumn fruiting.
Landscape Uses
Its dense, fast-growing habit makes it an excellent choice for both formal and informal hedging, as well as for shaping into clipped topiary. It also performs well in large pots, adding structure and greenery to courtyards or patios. The attractive blooms are ideal for cut flower arrangements, while the shrub‘s evergreen foliage makes it a beautiful backdrop in mixed garden beds year-round.
