Bartlettina sordida
A striking shrub with large, deep-green, textural leaves held aloft on bugundy stems. In late summer to early autumn, it produces clusters of vibrant, lilac flowers, which contrast beautifully against the lush foliage.
Cultural
Best grown in a partly shaded position, protected from frost, as it does not tolerate full sun. It has medium to high water needs and thrives in moist, well-draining, humus-rich soil. Be sure to mulch well to retain moisture. To maintain a compact size, prune after flowering.
Landscape Uses
Versatile in the landscape, thriving in shady areas as an understorey plant beneath larger deciduous trees. It works well as a feature plant in cottage gardens, where its bold foliage and vibrant flowers add interest. It can also be used as a tall informal hedge, providing structure and privacy, or pruned annually to maintain a more compact, medium-sized shrub for borders or foundation planting.
