Commonly called Giant Mondo Grass, this evergreen, clumping perennial has a lush, grass-like appearance. Its slender, arching leaves are deep green, forming dense, tufted clumps that create a soft, flowing texture in the landscape. In summer, it produces drooping spikes with clusters of white flowers that are followed by violet-blue berries.

Cultural

Ideal for shaded areas as harsh sun can scorch the leaves. Tolerant of light frosts once established.
Soil:
Prefers a fertile, well-drained soil but can tolerate poorer soils.
Aspect:
Part shade to full shade.
Maintenance:
Requires little maintenance. If rejuvenation is required, cut plants almost to the base in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth. Apply a general fertiliser in spring. Will benefit from a yearly application of compost. Prune spent flower stems at the base if berries are unwanted.
Water Requirements:
Drought tolerant once established but will benefit from supplementary watering.
Seasonal Interest:
Summer flowering, autumn fruiting.

Landscape Uses

O.jaburan makes an excellent border plant in shaded areas, and looks fantastic mass planted. They are also great for underplanting and look great with other shade-loving plants like Aucuba ‘Rozannie‘ and Sarcoccoca.
