Laurus nobilis 'Miles Choice' Corkscrew Standard
Standards are a classic and popular form of topiary, featuring plants with clear, stems topped by a well-defined, rounded canopy, resembling a lollipop shape. Our ‘Corkscrew‘ standards feature a trunk that has been trained as a spiral adding dramatic effect. Laurus nobilis ‘Miles Choice‘ features glossy, dark green leaves that are aromatic. The leaves of ‘Miles Choice‘ are typically smaller and more abundant than those of the traditional bay, giving the plant a lush and full appearance. It produces yellow flowers between September to October, adding to its overall appeal.
Cultural
The height of the standard trunk will remain consistent, but it will thicken with age. The size of the head is determined by the frequency and intensity of pruning. Frost tolerant once established and can cope with mild coastal conditions.
Soil:
Prefers a fertile, well-drained soil but can tolerate poorer soils.
Aspect:
Full sun to part shade.
Maintenance:
Light pruning can be undertaken throughout the year as required, any hard pruning should be done in spring. Apply a slow-release fertiliser at the start of spring to promote healthy growth. Will benefit from a yearly application of mulch. Can be susceptible to aphids and scale- treat accordingly.
Water Requirements:
Drought tolerant once established but will benefit from supplementary watering.
Seasonal Interest:
Spring flowering, year round foliage interest.
Landscape Uses
Standards make striking features in garden beds and look exceptional when paired with low shrubs or groundcovers. Matching pairs are particularly effective for framing entrances and walkways, whether planted in containers or directly in the ground. For containers, shorter standards typically provide the best visual balance, while taller standards are more suited to garden beds.
