Standards are a classic and popular form of topiary, featuring plants with clear, straight stems topped by a well-defined, rounded canopy, resembling a lollipop shape. The standout feature of ‘Brushfields Yellow‘ is its large, semi-double flowers. These blossoms have a soft, buttery yellow centre with a delicate, slightly frilled appearance, while the outer petals are smooth and antique white. This striking colour combination typically blooms in late winter to early spring. The glossy, dark green, and leathery leaves provide a rich backdrop that enhances the beauty of the flowers.

Cultural

The length of the standard trunk will remain consistent, but will thicken with age. The size of the head is determined by the frequency and intensity of pruning. Camellia japonica prefers a sheltered location, avoid direct afternoon sun that can scorch its leaves and flowers.
Soil:
Prefers a slightly acidic, well-drained soil.
Aspect:
Part shade.
Maintenance:
Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape. Be cautious of cutting off developing buds. Apply a Camellia-specific fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. Susceptible to aphids, spider mites, and scale insects- treat as required.
Water Requirements:
Will not tolerate extended dry periods, ensure adequate watering.
Seasonal Interest:
Winter to spring flowering.

Landscape Uses

Standards make striking features in garden beds and look exceptional when paired with low shrubs or groundcovers. Matching pairs are particularly effective for framing entrances and walkways, whether planted in containers or directly in the ground. For containers, shorter standards typically provide the best visual balance, while taller standards are more suited to garden beds.
