Magnolia acuminata x denudata 'Butterflies'
Magnolia ‘Butterflies‘ is a striking deciduous tree known for its upright, compact form. In early spring, it bursts into bloom with tulip-shaped flowers that are a vibrant, buttery yellow, standing out against the bare branches. These blooms have a delicate, sweet fragrance and are usually 10-15 cm across. The tree‘s foliage emerges shortly after the flowers, with lush, deep green leaves that are oval and slightly glossy. Our Magnolia ‘Butterflies‘ are grafted for optimal growing performance.
Cultural
Deciduous Magnolias should be planted in a sheltered position to avoid damage from strong winds. They can tolerate part-shade positions but flowering may be reduced.
Soil:
Prefers a fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil.
Aspect:
Full sun to part shade.
Maintenance:
Prune in late summer or autumn to maintain shape or remove any damaged or diseased growth. Apply a general fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. Will benefit from a yearly application of mulch in spring. Generally pest-free, but it‘s a good idea to monitor for common garden pests such as aphids and scale.
Water Requirements:
Will tolerate dry periods once established but performs better with adequate moisture. Will not tolerate waterlogged soil.
Seasonal Interest:
Late winter to spring flowering.
Landscape Uses
Magnolia ‘Butterflies‘ is a spectacular feature plant, looking fantastic whether planted as a single specimen or incorporated into a garden setting. Its relatively compact size makes it ideal for courtyards and smaller gardens. With a non-invasive, shallow root system, it can be safely planted close to the home, providing excellent summer shade. It pairs beautifully with other winter and spring flowering favourites, such as Azaleas, Camellias, and Hellebores, creating a harmonious and colourful display.
