Elaeagnus x ebbingei Ball
One of the hardiest shrubs available, Elaeagnus x ebbingei is a fast-growing, evergreen plant with a somewhat unruly habit that benefits from regular trimming. The leaves are a distinctive dusty green, speckled with silver dots, and have a striking silver underside. New growth often has a golden hue, adding to its visual appeal. In autumn, the shrub produces inconspicuous yet fragrant flowers, which are followed by small, edible red-orange berries in spring.
Cultural
Can tolerate sandy to heavy clay soils and grows well in conditions ranging from dense shade to full sun. It is frost-tolerant and unaffected by salt winds, making it suitable for coastal areas. Regular pruning is recommended to maintain its shape.
Landscape Uses
Can be used as a striking focal point in the garden, thanks to its distinctive foliage and decorative berries. In mixed borders, it adds valuable texture and colour contrast throughout the seasons. Topiary balls are particularly effective when planted in clusters or placed in pots to frame entrances, walkways, or key garden features.
