Gardenia are best grown in a position protected from strong winds and harsh afternoon sun in hotter climates.
Soil:
Prefers a slightly acidic, well-drained soil.
Aspect:
Full sun to part shade.
Maintenance:
Prune in late spring or early summer to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth. Apply a Gardenia-specific fertiliser during spring and summer. Will benefit from annual application of compost and mulch in spring. Susceptible to aphids, whitefly, and scale, treat accordingly.
Water Requirements:
Keep moist in the warmer months, water sparingly in winter. Will not tolerate waterlogged soil.
Seasonal Interest:
Late spring to autumn flowering.

Landscape Uses

Plant near entertaining areas to enjoy the beautiful fragrance of its flowers. Grow it in pots near windows to bring its delightful scent indoors. It also complements formal landscapes when paired with other traditional favorites like Azalea ‘Alba Magnifica‘ and Camellia ‘Setsugekka‘.
