The Dalmatian Iris or Sweet Iris is a hardy flowering perennial that belongs to the bearded iris group. We grow a Lilac to Mauve flowering variant with flowers appearing during spring and early summer over striking sword-shaped leaves. Their appearance and light fragrance will attract bees and butterflies to the garden.

Cultural

Can tolerate more shade than other Iris cultivars but performs better with more direct light. Plant with rhizome partially above the soil. CAUTION: Toxic to animals, will cause discomfort if ingested.
Soil:
Prefers a fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil.
Aspect:
Full sun to part shade.
Maintenance:
Cut back spent flowers as required. When the leaves brown off in autumn, cut the plant back to the base and apply a layer of mulch to protect the plant through winter. Divide every few years in late summer to maintain vigour and size.
Water Requirements:
Will tolerate dry periods once established but performs better with adequate moisture. Will not tolerate waterlogged soil.
Seasonal Interest:
Late spring flowering.

Landscape Uses

Use in mass planting in drifts and ideal as a perennial border plant. Its relatively compact nature is suited to narrow spaces and courtyard gardens. Can also be used as a cut flower.
