Iris pallida
The Dalmatian iris or sweet iris is a hardy flowering perennial that belongs to the bearded iris group. We grow a Lilac to Mauve flowering variant with flowers appearing during spring and early summer over striking sword-shaped leaves. Their appearance and fragrance will attract bees and butterflies to the garden.
Cultural
Iris pallida can tolerate light shade but prefers full sun or partial sun in hot areas. It can grow well in sandy or loamy soil that is slightly acidic or neutral, rich in organic matter and well-drained. The rhizomes should be planted partly above the soil surface and watered well when first planted. The plant can be divided every 3 to 4 years to maintain vigour. Iris pallida is drought tolerant and frost hardy once established.
Landscape Uses
Use in mass planting in drifts and ideal as a perennial border plant. Its relatively compact nature is suited to narrow spaces and courtyard gardens. Clumps can be divided in summer after flowering.
