Astrantia major 'Claret'
A lovely perennial with delicate purple-red 'pincushion' flowers, surrounded by papery-bracts. Flowers stand tall above its attractive, deep-green palmate leaves.
Cultural
Astrantia require cooler temperatures to grow and can withstand heavy frost. Susceptible to mildew in humid conditions but are resistant to slugs and snails.
Soil:
Prefers a well-drained, fertile soil.
Aspect:
Part shade. Protect from harsh sun.
Maintenance:
Cutback after flowering to encourage a second bloom. Cut back foliage in late autumn and apply mulch.
Water Requirements:
Will not tolerate extended dry periods, ensure adequate watering. Will not tolerate extended wet periods.
Seasonal Interest:
Spring flowering, second flush in late summer/early autumn.
Landscape Uses
This unique perennial is great for adding a pop colour to borders and mixes well with ornamental grasses. Great for underplanting in cottage/perennial style gardens
