Pieris japonica 'Temple Bells'
An elegant slow growing evergreen shrub. New growth is a bronze-red colour, turning to an attractive glossy dark green when older. Clusters of light pink buds open to gorgeous white bell shaped flowers in winter.
Cultural
Pieris require a position sheltered from strong winds and harsh afternoon sun.
Soil:
Prefers a fertile, acidic, well-drained soil.
Aspect:
Part shade.
Maintenance:
Deadhead spent flowers directly after flowering. Prune lightly in spring to maintain size or remove damaged growth. Apply a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants in spring. Will benefit from a yearly application of mulch.
Water Requirements:
Keep moist in the warmer months, water sparingly in winter. Will not tolerate waterlogged soil.
Seasonal Interest:
Late winter to spring flowering.
Landscape Uses
Perfect for use in shaded borders, foundation plantings, and as an understorey layer beneath larger trees. It works beautifully in Japanese inspired gardens and pairs well with other acid loving plants such as Camellias and Azaleas.
