Punica granatum 'Wonderful' (Pomegranate)
‘Wonderful‘ is a deciduous, bushy shrub or small tree that has bright, glossy green leaves that turn a vibrant yellow in autumn. In late spring to early summer, it produces stunning trumpet-shaped flowers that are bright orange to red. These beautiful blooms are followed by large, round fruit that matures in late summer to autumn.
Cultural
Pomegranates are self-pollinating. Fruit will only ripen on the plant, harvest when it is a deep colour and feels heavy for its size. Once established, they are hardy and can tolerate drought and frost.
Soil:
Prefers a light, well-drained soil.
Aspect:
Full sun.
Maintenance:
Prune in winter to maintain shape, remove any damaged or crossed branches. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth and fruit development.
Water Requirements:
Drought tolerant once established but fruit development will benefit from supplementary watering.
Seasonal Interest:
Late summer to autumn fruiting, autumn foliage colour.
Landscape Uses
Pomegranates serve as a stunning focal point in the garden with their attractive foliage, vibrant flowers, and unique fruit. They can be pruned to create dense hedges or screens, providing privacy while enhancing the landscape. For those with limited space, pomegranates can also be grown in pots or containers, making them suitable for patios, balconies, or smaller gardens. Additionally, they are ideal for Aussie Mediterranean gardens, especially when paired with citrus and fig trees.
