Azalea 'Kirin'
One of the most popular Kurume varieties, ‘Kirin‘ is a compact, evergreen shrub with a profusion of small, single, light pink blooms that adorn the plant in spring. These delicate flowers contrast beautifully against the backdrop of fine, dark green glossy foliage.
Cultural
A shade-loving Azalea, protect from harsh sunlight.
Soil:
Prefers a fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil.
Aspect:
Part shade.
Maintenance:
Prune after flowering to maintain compact shape. Apply an Azalea-specific fertiliser in spring and late summer. Will benefit from a yearly application of mulch. If flowers become mushy, it might be a sign of petal blight; remove and dispose of affected flowers, treat with appropriate fungicides and avoid overhead watering. Susceptible to insect attacks, such as aphids and mite- treat accordingly.
Water Requirements:
Will not tolerate extended dry periods, ensure adequate watering.
Seasonal Interest:
Late winter to spring flowering.
Landscape Uses
Ideal for borders, mass plantings, and under trees where it flourishes in filtered sunlight, ‘Kirin‘ also excels as a container plant on shaded patios or balconies. Kurume Azaleas are often used in Japanese-style gardens, where they are clipped into gorgeous flowering mounds. They complement other Japanese-style plants such as Acer, Camellia, Pieris, and Ophiopogon.
