Platanus × acerifolia, commonly known as the London Plane, is a large, stately deciduous tree with a broad, spreading canopy and distinctive mottled bark that peels away to reveal patches of cream, olive, and grey. Its large, maple-like leaves are deep green and turn yellow to brown in autumn. This tree is highly recognisable in urban landscapes for its architectural form, dappled shade, and striking bark texture.

Cultural

Platanus produce fine hairs on its leaves and fruit that can cause irritation or trigger hay fever and respiratory issues, particularly in spring.
Soil:
Can tolerate any soil, including compacted.
Aspect:
Full sun to part shade.
Maintenance:
Prune in late winter or early spring to remove and damaged or dying branches. Fruit can be a hazard on the ground, remove as it falls.
Water Requirements:
Drought tolerant once established. Will benefit from occasional, deep watering during extended dry periods.
Seasonal Interest:
Autumn foliage colour, winter fruiting.
