Pachystegia insignis
Commonly known as the Marlborough Rock Daisy, this mounding shrub makes an interesting addition to any garden. Its big leathery leaves are a deep green with silvery hairs coating the underside. It produces white daisy-like flowers followed by fluffy seedheads.
Cultural
Pachystegia insignis is great for windy or coastal sites, but will not tolerate humidity or poor airflow. It can take a couple of years for plants to take off after planting.
Soil:
Tolerates any well-drained soil, suitable for poor soils.
Aspect:
Full sun to part shade.
Maintenance:
Requires little maintenance. Prune after flowering to maintain shape or size if desired. Apply a slow release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth.
Water Requirements:
Will tolerate dry periods once established but will benefit from supplementary watering. Will not tolerate waterlogged soil.
Seasonal Interest:
Late spring to summer flowering, year round foliage interest.
Landscape Uses
Pachystegia insignis is suited to coastal conditions, as it naturally inhabits rocky cliffs and coastal niches in its native New Zealand. The striking daisy flowers against the glossy dark green leaves make this an excellent choice for a feature point for any garden.
