Persicaria affinis 'Dimity'
A hardy, perennial groundcover that forms a dense mat over time. Throughout summer and autumn, flower spikes are held above the foliage on red stems and turn from deep pink to a pale rose. Foliage changes from deep green to bronze and red in late autumn.
Cultural
Persicaria can tolerate some shade but flowers better in full sun positions. Avoid pruning until late winter to provide colour and texture to the garden.
Soil:
Prefers a fertile, well-drained soil.
Aspect:
Full sun to part shade.
Maintenance:
Prune in late winter to remove spent flower stems and old leaves. Apply a general fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. Plants can be divided every few years, either in autumn or early spring.
Water Requirements:
Will tolerate dry periods once established but will benefit from supplementary watering.
Seasonal Interest:
Summer to autumn flowering, late autumn foliage colour.
Landscape Uses
Great as a groundcover or border plant for walkways. Plant in informal rockeries, and can be grown in pots. For more info, read this great article at The Gardenist"
