Elettaria cardamomum, commonly known as Green Cardamom, is a perennial plant in the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. In warm regions, it produces white flowers with violet accents, followed by the development of cardamom seed pods. In cultivation, it is used more for its vivid mid-green foliage that emits a fresh cardamom aroma.

Cultural

Elettaria will not flower or set fruit in cooler regions. Foliage can be used in cooking and floristry.
Soil:
Prefers a fertile, well-drained soil.
Aspect:
Part shade to full shade.
Maintenance:
Before spring, cut back oldest stems to the ground and apply a general fertiliser to promote new growth. Will benefit from annual application of compost and mulch in spring.
Water Requirements:
Will tolerate dry periods once established but performs better with adequate moisture.
Seasonal Interest:
Year round foliage interest, summer flowering (warm climates only).

Landscape Uses

Ideal for planting under larger trees in mass or mixed with other tropical plants. Will add a structural element to the garden with its vertical growth habit. It also grows well in pots and containers. With its attractive foliage and edible seed pods, it enhances garden settings while providing both ornamental and functional value.
