Osmanthus heterophyllus purpureus
Osmanthus heterophyllus purpureus is a hardy evergreen shrub known by a few common names, including Purple Holly Osmanthus, Holly Leaf or Purple Leaf False Holly. The purpureus obviously alludes to the purple new growth on the holly shaped leaves. Throughout the cooler months dainty white fragrant flowers will appear.
Cultural
Can be planted in sunny to part shade areas in moist well drained soil. Keep moist in dry weather and once established is resilient to frost. Give a light prune after flowering.
Landscape Uses
The feature of this plant is its foliage. From the glossy green mature foliage, deep purple-black new growth adds interest in spring. Good for cut flowers with its white perfumed clusters appearing in autumn. Perfect as an informal hedging or screening plant, it will also make an attractive container specimen or within garden beds.
