Viburnum davidii
This evergreen, mounding shrub has distinct, three-veined leaves which add a subtle texture to the garden. Deep burgundy-pink flower buds open into crisp white flower heads which create a lovely contrast to the deep-green leaves. Decorative, blue fruit (drupes) appear afterwards, which are often used in floristry.
Cultural
Protect from harsh afternoon sun in warmer climates. If fruit is desired, choose a dioecious plant or be sure to plant a male and female clone. CAUTION: fruit is harmful if ingested.
Soil:
Prefers a fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil.
Aspect:
Full sun to part shade.
Maintenance:
Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain shape, or to remove any dead or damaged branches. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. Will benefit for a yearly application of mulch to help with water retention.
Water Requirements:
Will tolerate dry periods once established but performs better with adequate moisture.
Seasonal Interest:
Spring flowering, summer to winter fruiting.
Landscape Uses
Viburnum davidii is a great choice for adding texture to a mixed border, underplanting trees or even to create a low hedge.
