Albizia julibrissin is a moderately fast growing small tree that evokes a tropical feeling in a garden thanks to its delicate and airy foliage and silk-like fluffy pink blooms.

Cultural

A very hardy tree once established. Can be shorter lived – to around 20-30 years. This succession can be utilised as a strength. It can grow into a feature tree and focal point relatively quickly whilst other plants establish and fill out. It can also provide shade quickly in an exposed garden whilst letting a slower growing shade tree form its mature canopy.
Soil:
Adaptable to a variety of soils, growing well even in poor quality soil.
Aspect:
Full sun to part shade.
Maintenance:
Low maintenance once established. Ensure the tree is staked properly whilst establishing. Prune as needed to create a desired shape.
Water Requirements:
Tolerates dry well once established, but thrives when irrigated over summer. Mulch well to maintain good soil moisture.
Seasonal Interest:
Soft fluffy pink flowers in summer set against delicate green fern-like foliage.

Landscape Uses

Suitable for coastal, Mediterranean, and tropical gardens, this plant’s distinctive V-shaped canopy creates space for underplanting, while its fine, fern-like foliage provides an attractive contrast to larger-leaved plants. Consider mass planting with species such as Ligularia reniformis, Elettaria cardamomum, Fatsia japonica, or Bartlettina sordida ‘Atrorubens’ to create a lush, layered effect.
