Magnolia figo
An attractive evergreen shrub with glossy green leaves that slowly grows to its maximum height. An old favourite courtesy of its highly scented yellow-purple flowers produced in Spring, early Summer and Autumn.
Cultural
Evergreen Magnolias can tolerate part shade but do best in a sunny position, sheltered from strong winds. Once established they are heat and frost tolerant.
Soil:
Prefers a fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil.
Aspect:
Full sun to part shade.
Maintenance:
Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape or remove any damaged or diseased growth. Apply a general fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. Will benefit from a yearly application of mulch.
Water Requirements:
Moderately drought tolerant once established but will benefit from supplementary watering. Will not tolerate waterlogged soil.
Seasonal Interest:
Spring to summer flowering.
Landscape Uses
Magnolia figo (syn Michelia) is famous for its small flowers; their strong sweet scent will drift about in the air, so it is a great one for planting around entertaining areas or close to the home.
