An elegant evergreen tree with a pyramidal to upright growth habit. The leaves are large, glossy, and dark green on the upper side, with a contrasting rusty-brown underside. It produces large, creamy white, cup-shaped flowers that can reach up to 30 cm in diameter. These blooms are highly fragrant and appear from late spring through summer.

Cultural

Magnolias prefer moist, fertile, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. When planting, it's beneficial to prepare the soil accordingly. A full sun position is best, though they do tolerate partial shade. Providing some protection from strong winds is also helpful. Prune to shape in late winter or early spring, just before new growth begins. We recommend an annual application of high-quality fertilizer in spring, along with mulching and watering during the drier months, especially while the plant is establishing itself. Once established in the landscape, 'St Mary' is a very resilient plant, capable of enduring heat and light frost. It is also relatively pest and disease-free.

Landscape Uses

Is suitable for lining driveways or pathways, creating a grand entrance with its upright growth and abundant flowers. Its dense foliage and upright growth habit can also be utilized to create natural screens or hedges for privacy. Additionally, it thrives when grown in large containers on patios or in courtyards, allowing for close enjoyment of its blooms and fragrance. It is a great choice for cottage and formal gardens. Plant with other classics such as Camellias and Hydrangeas.
