Prunus lusitanica
Prunus lusitanica, commonly known as Portuguese Laurel, is a dense, evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy, dark green leaves held on striking deep red stems. In late spring to early summer, it produces long, clusters of small, fragrant white flowers, followed by small red fruits that mature to black.
Cultural
Thrives in a wide range of soil types, with a preference for moist, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Hardy and tolerant of dry conditions once established, it responds well to regular pruning, making it easy to maintain as a dense hedge or screen. Wind-tolerant and adaptable, it performs reliably in both coastal and inland settings. For best results, apply a long-term slow-release fertiliser in early spring and prune as needed to maintain shape and form.
Landscape Uses
A versatile evergreen, ideal for creating dense, formal or informal hedges and privacy screens, thanks to its lush, glossy foliage and upright growth. It can also be used as a feature shrub or small tree, with its dark green leaves providing a rich, elegant backdrop for other plants in the garden. In late spring to early summer, it becomes particularly striking when covered in masses of fragrant white flowers.
