Prunus lusitanica, commonly known as Portuguese Laurel, is a dense, evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy, dark green leaves held on striking deep red stems. In late spring to early summer, it produces long, clusters of small, fragrant white flowers, followed by small red fruits that mature to black.

Cultural

Prunus lusitanca is tolerant of heat, frost, wind and coastal conditions. Prune soon after flowering to avoid fruit production. CAUTION: fruit is toxic to mammals.
Soil:
Prefers a fertile, well-drained soil but can tolerate poorer soils.
Aspect:
Full sun to part shade.
Maintenance:
Prune lightly throughout the year to maintain size and shape. Hard pruning or removal of branches should be completed in late winter or early spring. Apply a slow release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. Will benefit from a yearly application of mulch. Susceptible to aphids, mildew and shot-hole disease, treat as required. Good air-circulation will help minimise disease.
Water Requirements:
Drought tolerant once established. Will benefit from occasional, deep watering during extended dry periods.
Seasonal Interest:
Summer flowering, year round foliage interest.

Landscape Uses

A versatile evergreen, ideal for creating dense, formal or informal hedges and privacy screens, thanks to its lush, glossy foliage and upright growth. It can also be used as a feature shrub or small tree, with its dark green leaves providing a rich, elegant backdrop for other plants in the garden. In late spring to early summer, it becomes particularly striking when covered in masses of fragrant white flowers.
