Wisteria sinensis
Wisteria sinensis is a deciduous climber, that produces a dramatic flourish of purple, lightly scented flowers in late spring to early summer. Add whimsy and charm to your garden with a walkway covered in shiny, green, pinnate leaves and long racemes of flowers.
Cultural
Wisteria are vigorous climbers and require a support to grow. They can tolerate part shade but flowering will be reduced.
                            Soil:

                                    Prefers a fertile, well-drained soil.
        Aspect:

                                    Full sun to part shade.
        Maintenance:

Leave young plants unpruned until they have established themselves. Once established, prune twice a year. In late summer, prune shoots back to 5-6 leaves (or 30cm) which will allow the wood to ripen and improve flower formation. In late autumn or early winter, reduce these shoots to 2-3 buds (or 10cm) so the flowers will be visible in spring. Apply an organic fertiliser in spring if plants lack vigour.
        Water Requirements:

Drought tolerant once established but will benefit from supplementary watering.
        Seasonal Interest:

                                    Spring to summer flowering.
        Landscape Uses
Grow over arbours and walkways to create a dappled sun effect, with the pendulous flowers drooping down. Support is very important for this plant. Use Wisteria on sturdy pergolas, gazebos and arches or grow as a standard on a steel frame.
