One of our most popular plants, ‘Little Gem,‘ is an outstanding variety of Magnolia grandiflora. It is a compact-growing, evergreen small tree, which, due to its smaller size, is perfectly suited to the home garden. It produces large, creamy white, cup-shaped flowers that can reach up to 20 cm in diameter. These blooms are fragrant and appear throughout the summer, often starting as early as late spring. Its leaves are glossy, and dark green on the upper side, with a contrasting rusty-brown underside.

Cultural

Evergreen Magnolias can tolerate part shade but do best in a sunny position, sheltered from strong winds. Once established they are heat and frost tolerant.
Soil:
Prefers a fertile, slightly acidic, well-drained soil.
Aspect:
Full sun to part shade.
Maintenance:
Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape or remove any damaged or diseased growth. Apply a general fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. Will benefit from a yearly application of mulch.
Water Requirements:
Moderately drought tolerant once established but will benefit from supplementary watering. Will not tolerate waterlogged soil.
Seasonal Interest:
Late spring to autumn flowering.

Landscape Uses

Its compact size and beautiful blooms make it an excellent focal point in smaller gardens. Additionally, the dense foliage and upright growth habit make it suitable for creating natural screens or hedges for privacy. ‘Little Gem‘ also provides a perfect backdrop for garden beds. It is a great choice for cottage and formal gardens. Plant with other classics such as Camellias and Hydrangeas.
