Acmena smithii minor 'Forest Flame'
A compact, dense Australian native shrub admired for its brilliant flushes of fiery red to orange new growth, which contrast beautifully with its fine, glossy green mature foliage. In summer, it produces small white flowers followed by purple berries, adding seasonal interest. Psyllid-resistant and naturally neat, it offers vibrant colour and structure year-round. Can easily be kept pruned under 1.0m.
Cultural
Prefers a position in full sun to part shade for optimal growth and vibrant colour. Once established, it is highly frost hardy and tolerant of dry conditions. Regular pruning helps maintain its compact shape and encourages fresh, colourful new growth. It responds well to hard pruning if needed to control size. To support healthy growth, apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring. Like other forms of Acmena smithii, it is resistant to psyllid damage.
Landscape Uses
Ideal for low hedging, narrow screens, and borders in small gardens or tight spaces. Its compact, upright habit and vibrant new growth make it perfect for adding colour and structure to courtyards, patios, and container plantings. It can also be used for formal hedges, topiary shapes, or as a striking backdrop in mixed garden beds.
