Ruscus hypoglossum
Ruscus hypoglossum is a compact, evergreen shrub reaching around 50cm tall, forming neat clumps of arching stems. Its glossy, bright green ‘leaves’ are actually flattened shoots (cladodes), which bear small greenish-cream flowers in spring, followed by striking red berries in summer.
Cultural
Ruscus is a low-maintenance shrub that can tolerate coastal conditions and frost.
Soil:
Tolerates any well drained soil.
Aspect:
Part shade to full shade.
Maintenance:
Prune old stems down to the base in early spring to make room for next growth. Larger plants can be divided in early spring. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. To rejuvenate old or overgrown plants, cut them down to the base in late winter or early spring. Will benefit from a yearly application of mulch.
Water Requirements:
Drought tolerant once established.
Seasonal Interest:
Spring flowering, summer fruiting, year round foliage interest.
Landscape Uses
Great for mass planting under trees as it can tolerate competition with tree roots. Looks fantastic planted under Magnolia ‘Exmouth’ or ‘St. Mary’.
