Liriope giganteum 'Evergreen Giant'
Commonly known as Lilyturf, ‘Evergreen Giant‘ has long, arching, strap-like leaves that are deep green and glossy, it grows in a clumping habit, with the foliage forming dense, rounded mounds. In late summer to early autumn, it produces tall flower spikes that rise above the foliage, adorned with small, violet to lavender-coloured flowers. After flowering, the plant often produces small, black, berry-like fruits.
Cultural
Liriope can survive in full shade but growth can become elongated. Frost tolerant once established and can cope with coastal conditions.
Soil:
Prefers a fertile, well-drained soil but can tolerate poorer soils.
Aspect:
Full sun to part shade.
Maintenance:
To promote fresh new leaves in spring, cut old foliage down close to the base in winter. Can be divided in late winter or early spring. Light feeders, apply a small amount of slow-release fertiliser in spring. Will benefit from a yearly application of mulch. Susceptible to snail and slug predation, apply baits as required.
Water Requirements:
Drought tolerant once established but will benefit from supplementary watering.
Seasonal Interest:
Late spring to summer flowering.
Landscape Uses
Widely used in landscaping, Liriope is an ideal ground cover and border plant. Smaller varieties are perfect for planting between pavers. They are also great for underplanting and look fantastic with other glossy-leaf plants such as Gardenia florida and Helleborus varieties.
