Hostas are herbaceous perennials that have stunning lush foliage; they come in many different colours such as blue-greys, golden yellows, greens or a variegated mix. They die down over winter and erupt with new growth in spring. During summer they produce spikes of tubular nodding flowers in a purple-white.
Prefer a full shade to part shade position, any full sun in the warmer months will cause the decorative leaves to burn. Preform best in a moist, well-drained, fertile soil that is slightly acidic. Summer watering is advised. Hostas attract snails and slugs, applications of snail bait will prevent chewed leaves. Fertilise in spring with a palletised organic fertiliser to kick start their new growth.
Plant different varieties with varied foliage shape and colours en mass to create a stunning foliage effect in shaded areas. Ideal for planting under Acers for a Japanese style garden. Grow well in containers providing you keep them well watered in summer.
