Coniferous evergreen, native to woodland areas of Japan, China and Korea. Foliage is a dark green with pale yellow coloured shoots arising in spring and a growth habit of fastigiate/ columnar.

Prefers a part shade position though can tolerate shady conditions better than most needled evergreens and also has a good heat tolerance. Grows best in moist, sandy, well-drained soils. Its hardiness makes it ideal for the coast and dryer areas. Requires minimal watering when established. Well suited to harsh coastal conditions and for poolside planting. Has quite an upright narrow growth habit requiring only the occasional trim to maintain shape.
