Banksia praemorsa 'Red Dawn'
This tall spreading shrub produces vibrant burgundy cylindrical flowers from autumn to winter, providing a key food source for nectar-loving insects and birds.
Cultural
Banksia ‘Red Dawn‘ can tolerate salt laden winds and light frosts once established. Will not tolerate waterlogged soil.
Soil:
Prefers a light, sandy and well-drained soil. Avoid heavy clay and poorly draining soils. Grows well in impoverished soils.
Aspect:
Full sun to part shade.
Maintenance:
Lightly prune after flowering to maintain the desired form. When pruning keep in mind that reshooting will not occur if pruned below existing green foliage, and flowers are borne on old growth. Feed with a native fertiliser after pruning to encourage strong growth and flowers.
Water Requirements:
Drought tolerant once established but will benefit from supplementary watering. Will not tolerate waterlogged soil. Annual mulching helps maintain even soil moisture.
Seasonal Interest:
Autumn to winter flowering.
Landscape Uses
Can be used in coastal settings and is quite adaptable to most conditions. Red Dawn can also be placed in pots but must ensure that an Australian native potting mix and fertiliser is used.
