Elaeocarpus reticulatus Ball
Commonly known as Blueberry Ash, Elaeocarpus reticulatus is an Australian native. It produces bird-attracting, bright blue, oval-shaped fruits (drupes) from April to October. From October to January, dainty pinkish-white flowers appear in masses. This combination of fruit and flowers creates a long ornamental display that lasts nearly all year round. Older leaves turn a striking shade of bright red, adding further seasonal interest.
Cultural
Thrives in moist, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade and is adaptable to a range of conditions, including coastal environments as well as low-nutrient and dry soils. Prune when needed to keep ball shape. An application of slow-release fertiliser in spring supports healthy growth and flowering.
Landscape Uses
Topiary balls can add a formal elegance to any design. Its flowers and fruit also make for a great feature. Works well with other natives such as Banksia and Agonis and under plantings of Lomandra and Dianella.
