Commonly called ‘Tree Anemone’ - Carpenteria is a hardy, adaptable and low maintenance shrub. Its soft deep-green foliage and delicate white single flowers belie its tough nature. Carpenteria californica is an evergreen open and free-growing shrub known for its striking floral display in late spring and early summer. The pure white, scented blooms have canary yellow stamens in the centre and contrast beautifully against its dark green foliage.

Cultural

Grows best in full sun with some protection from the harshest afternoon sun in hot climates. Dry tolerant, preferring intermittent deep soakings over light regular watering. Tip prune soft-floppy growth during the growing season to promote bushiness. After flowering, it can be cut back by one third to encourage a fuller shape.
Soil:
Tolerant of most soils provided they are well draining.
Aspect:
Full sun to afternoon shade
Maintenance:
Tip-prune soft growth to promote bushiness, can be cut back by up to a half after flowering for a denser shrub.
Water Requirements:
Deep intermittent soaking is preferred to light, regular waterings
Seasonal Interest:
Romantic soft-white flowers en masse in spring

Landscape Uses

Ideal for mass plantings in the middle to back of a garden bed. Its deep glossy-green foliage and free-flowing habit works well in green and white themed plantings, cottage gardens and Mediterranean style gardens.
