Ophiopogon japonicus
Commonly called Mondo Grass, O.japonicus is a low-growing, evergreen perennial with a lush, grass-like appearance. Its slender, arching leaves are deep green, forming dense, tufted clumps that create a soft, flowing texture in the landscape. The foliage has a fine, slightly glossy surface, adding a subtle sheen to garden beds and borders. In summer, small, delicate, pale lilac-to-white flowers emerge on short stems, nestled within the foliage.
Cultural
Mondo Grass is highly adaptable, tolerating drought, humidity, and frost once established. Harsh afternoon sun can burn the leaf tips.
Soil:
Prefers a fertile, well-drained soil.
Aspect:
Full sun to full shade
Maintenance:
Requires little maintenance. If rejuvenation is required, cut plants almost to the base in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth. Apply a general fertiliser in spring. Will benefit from a yearly application of compost. Prune spent flower stems at the base if berries are unwanted.
Water Requirements:
Drought tolerant once established but will benefit from supplementary watering.
Seasonal Interest:
Summer flowering, year round foliage interest.
Landscape Uses
It is ideal for edging pathways, defining garden borders, and creating lush, low-maintenance groundcover. Its dense, tufted growth softens hardscape elements, making it perfect for planting between pavers or around stepping stones. Frequently used in Japanese and formal gardens, it also thrives under trees and shrubs where other plants may struggle. Additionally, it works well in mass plantings for texture and contrast or as an elegant addition to container gardens.
