Pieris japonica 'Katsura'
Has a compact growth habit, and a continuous flow of eye-catching deep red new foliage through spring and summer, this is a resilient performer in a variety of conditions. Rose-coloured blooms on racemes appear in late winter, creating an elegant cascade of flowers in contrast to the deep green foliage.
Cultural
Prefers a partly shaded position sheltered from strong winds and harsh afternoon sun. It grows best in moist, well-drained, acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Regular watering is important, especially during dry periods, but avoid waterlogging. Apply a fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants in spring. Mulch annually to conserve moisture and maintain soil acidity. Deadhead spent flowers directly after flowering.
Landscape Uses
If you’re inspired by Japanese design, then you can’t walk past Pieris ‘Katsura’ pbr for your garden retreat. Featuring dramatic wine-red new foliage, which ages to green, Katsura will liven the dullest corner of your landscape. Use in mixed garden plantings or as informal hedges in semi shaded areas. Combines well with Azalea, Camellia, Hydrangea and Helleborus.
