Banksia verticillata
Banksia verticillata, or Granite Banksia, is a striking shrub or small tree with rugged, leathery green leaves featuring serrated edges and silvery undersides. It produces large, cylindrical golden-yellow flower spikes that contrast beautifully with its textured foliage and attract birds and pollinators. The gnarled grey bark and naturally sculptural form enhance its visual appeal, making it a standout feature in coastal or native landscapes.
Cultural
Banksia verticillata can tolerate salt laden winds and light frosts once established. Will not tolerate waterlogged soil or humidity.
Soil:
Prefers a light, well-drained soil. Avoid heavy clay.
Aspect:
Full sun to part shade.
Maintenance:
Lightly prune after flowering to improve shape, feed with a native fertiliser at the same time. Banksia‘s flower on old wood so avoid heavy pruning. Will benefit from an annual application of mulch.
Water Requirements:
Drought tolerant once established but will benefit from supplementary watering. Will not tolerate waterlogged soil.
Seasonal Interest:
Autumn to winter flowering.
Landscape Uses
Works well as a feature plant due to its striking flower spikes and attractive foliage. Its dense growth makes it ideal for use as a windbreak or hedge, especially in coastal gardens where it can withstand salt winds.
