Just because a space is compact doesn’t mean it can’t pack a punch. Clever use of plants that suit the scale of the space will create a garden that will have great impact.
As with any garden, planning is key but especially so when every corner of the garden counts. Pots and raised beds can help utilise space and climbing plants, trellis and espalier will also make the most of walls and fences.
Warners have been growing a range of upright fastigiate trees and shrubs for decades and we’ve narrowed a few of them down here to make selection easy. There are also a range of compact shrubs and ground covers that will add colour, fragrance and texture to the design.
Plant Selections:
Osmanthus heterophyllus purpureus Multistem
This Multistem involves the careful process of clearing the lower limbs of the plant while allowing the upper growth to form a rounded mound. Commonly known as Purple Holly, Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Purpureus' features glossy, dark green leaves that are spiny and serrated, with a distinctive purple tint on the new growth.
Ginkgo biloba 'Lemonlime Spire' pbr
A versatile plant, thriving in containers and complementing formal garden styles while also enhancing mixed plantings with its striking vertical presence.
Cotinus x 'Grace'
Perfect for adding dramatic colour and texture to garden borders, shrub borders, or mixed planting beds. It works well as a focal point in a garden, with its striking foliage and billowing flowers creating visual interest throughout the seasons.
Prunus lusitanica Ball
Commonly known as Portuguese Laurel, is a dense, evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy, dark green leaves held on striking deep red stems. In late spring to early summer, it produces long, clusters of small, fragrant white flowers, followed by small red fruits that mature to black.
Viburnum tinus 'Eve Prince' Ball
Foliage is dense with glossy dark green leaves which acquire a purple hue through the colder months. Masses of pinkish-white flowers are prolific during winter and spring which are bird and bee attracting.
Courtyard Citrus
Our Courtyard Citrus range is perfect for small courtyards and balcony gardens where people want a fruiting shrub. Specifically grown for containers, the Courtyard Citrus will bear an abundance of fruit from mid-autumn to winter, and are easy to maintain
Acer palmatum 'Shaina'
An eye-catching cultivar of Japanese Maple, prized for its vibrant foliage and compact size. This deciduous tree features deeply lobed, palmate leaves that emerge in spring with a brilliant crimson-red colour. As the tree ages, the bark often develops interesting patterns, ridges, and furrows, adding visual interest to the tree's appearance.
Hydrangea paniculata Grandiflora
Its striking, large flower clusters make it an excellent focal point in garden beds or borders. It pairs beautifully with perennials, shrubs, and grasses, adding a burst of colour and texture to mixed borders. Great for large pots and containers.
Miscanthus sinensis 'Adagio'
'Adagio' is an elegant, compact ornamental grass with a refined appearance. This smaller cultivar features narrow, arching leaves that are finely textured and delicate.
Miscanthus transmorrisonensis
Miscanthus transmorrisonensis features narrow, elongated leaves that arch gracefully outward from the centre of the clump. The leaves have a fine, delicate texture and are green with a subtle silvery or golden sheen, creating a soft, flowing effect in the garden
Euphorbia amygdaloides var robbiae
Ideal for borders, underplanting trees, and container planting, 'Ruby Glow' adds bold foliage colour that provides year-round interest. Its compact form also makes it a great choice for edging pathways or creating low-maintenance planting schemes.
Aster x frikartii 'Monch'
One of the first Asters to bloom the ‘Monch’ is bound to draw attention to any garden with its bold masses of attractive, soft purple daisy like flowers with golden yellow centres. Flowers are in abundance from late January to early May.
Pieris japonica 'Temple Bells'
An elegant slow growing evergreen shrub. New growth is a bronze-red colour, turning to an attractive glossy dark green when older. Clusters of light pink buds open to gorgeous white bell shaped flowers in winter.
Rhaphiolepis indica 'Spring Pearl'
A compact, rounded evergreen shrub with glossy dark green foliage that provides year-round structure. In spring, it is covered with masses of soft pink, star-shaped flowers, creating a delicate and attractive display.
